The Flawed Obsession With KPIs and Metrics

You have probably heard the buzzword “data-driven” so many times that it now gives you nausea.

“Data-driven” is a big thing these days. We want our people, across functions, to be data-driven.

That is touted as one of the drivers behind digital tools and technologies investments.

And it is true.

Only if we understand what exactly that means.

To highlight that they are building “data-driven” teams, many leaders force their teams to chase metrics and KPIs. The rationale is that if they can manage these KPIs, they are using a “data-driven” approach to run whatever they are running.

But are they?

Instead of understanding that building data-driven organizations is more about skill set development, we have put chasing KPIs at the core of it. This means that those being evaluated with these KPIs will find ways to “manage” these KPIs.

This is the challenge we will discuss in Episode 11 of “Think About It”.
