Generative AI in Healthcare (Part II of V)

With the recent explosion in the Generative AI domain, like many other industries, healthcare organizations are also exploring ways to integrate LLMs into their workflows. In this five-part article series, we will explore how Generative AI can enhance experience in healthcare, from the perspective of both the patient and the provider. This is the second part of this series. You can read the first part here.

During the pandemic, I once tried an e-doctor service that claimed to leverage AI. The process was simple. After you register on the app, the app asks you a set of questions. Based on your responses, it provides an initial diagnosis and THEN connects you to chat with a human healthcare professional.

Based on my interaction, it was obvious that the app was using clustering for the initial high-level diagnosis. While not precisely AI, I liked the approach of pairing an algorithm with a human healthcare professional. That is what the future of healthcare is about, vs. trying to replace human healthcare professionals.

Hence, when I consider the uses of Generative AI in healthcare, I do so from the same perspective. Rather than always thinking about leveraging Generative AI to replace what humans can do in critical professions like healthcare, we need to think about how we can augment and enhance tasks that humans can do. We will leverage this approach in this article series.

In the first part, I mentioned that Generative AI can be critical in patient and doctor interaction. This morning, as I was pondering, I realized that there is a third element in this ecosystem. Doctors, at least in the U.S., generally are part of a practice. This practice is either a group of doctors or a healthcare (hospital) system. In this case, the provider, the practice, or the healthcare system interfaces with the patient unless the patient calls to talk directly with the doctor or the doctor wants to talk with the patient for some reason.

Hence, we will explore the applications of Generative AI in these three buckets:

  • Patient
  • Provider/Interface/Intermediary
  • Doctors

Each of these three components can benefit from Generative AI enormously. In the third part of this article series, we will explore how Generative AI can enhance the patient experience. The third part will be published on 06/21.
