The danger to the world and nations is not from AI becoming self-aware. It is from AI gaslighting.
Gaslighting, in general words, is a scenario when someone manipulates you to question your reality. As per healthline.com, gaslighters will (https://lnkd.in/eQZ7egej):
1. Call you “too sensitive” or “crazy” when you express your needs or concerns.
2. Express doubts to others about your feelings, behavior, and state of mind.
3. Twisting or retelling events to shift blame to you.
AI gaslighting draws upon some of these aspects, which essentially are all around attempts to distort your notion of reality. AI gaslighting is what I like to call intellectual gaslighting.
Intellectual gaslighting is when facts are manipulated to install fear or project a totally different information, which is far away from facts.
And we are seeing a lot of it in the AI world recently.
First, it was the alarm about the risk of AI-induced human extinction.
Talks about- Our AI is now doing things that we never taught it to do.
Then the news (which later turned out to be fake), about AI algorithms suggesting the elimination of humans.
These gaslighting instances are badly formulated marketing gimmicks. In some cases, when the community does not buy them, the researcher gets fired.
Or you let the gimmick die down, quietly dusting the remains under the carpet.
Marketing innovation is a must. And most of the sources of these gaslighted statements are from comanies that actually generate innovation.
But then they take the concept of innovation marketing too far.
The danger to the world and nations is not from AI becoming self-aware. It is from AI gaslighting.
In this video, I touch upon a few but the list is long.
For example, in the video I have not touched upon the impact of these gaslighted statements on the effort towards formulating AI ethics regulations.
For the sake of the dignity of the field of AI, and the hard work researchers have put to generate the recent array of AI boom, this gaslighting needs to be stigmatized.
